Bleach safety question...

funnyman527 Mar 27, 2005 11:33 PM

Ok, so i have a misty mate and it's got a weird smell to it. I wanna use it for my lizards, but i'm not too sure wut the smell is whether it's mold or wut-not, so i'm considering giving it a light bleaching, but i'm not sure how safe this is since my lizards will eventually be consuming wut comes out of it. Any thoughts on how i should go about this? or if i should use another type of cleaning substance?

Thanks.

I use a product called gse (grapefruit seed extract) It's very antiseptic, and non toxic, so you don't have to worry about making your animals sick with cleaning chemicals.
I use it with vinegar very concentrated when cleaning the system
for maintenance,(I pump thru a loop with hot water for a couple hours) I also add a few drops to the water reservoir
once in a while when the system is hooked up just to kill
off any nasty things growing.

I should have asked, what was the misty mate used for previously? You mentioned a weird smell, if it's been used
with anything other than water I would definatley not use it.

Nothing weird was kept in it. I jsut didn't use it for a few months, and there must have been sum water left in it, b/c it was moist and smelt weird when i rinse it out
and the smell was just lingering abit.

thanks for the replies too, btw

It will be ok to use a small amount of bleach...1 part to 10 parts of water...after you soak it/clean it, make sure you rinse it well...then make sure you use declorinator (the liquid type that you can buy in the aquatic section at any pet store). Make sure it says it eliminates chlorine. Read the directions and it will say like use 1 capful for 5 gallons or something like that...make a judgement call. I usually use more than they say just to be on the safe side.

Hand mister. Not my misting system but I will be spraying the animals with it directly with it, and i'm not wanting to risk any lethal ingestion.
