any ideas for food?

kulkat Mar 28, 2005 09:01 AM

My Male Veiled is approx. 4 1/2 years old. Has always been a picky eater (quit crickets at 1!)
Now I noticed he won't even eat Superworms. He also doesn't like Silkworms, Butterworms,(those other worms that look like Butter worms). He likes Hornworms, but I have to order them and they grow too quickly, humoungous in a week or two, too big for him. He only eats 1 -2 every other day when they are small.
Any other suggestions? He seems healthy otherwise.

Wax worms always works for me, but you said that he isn't a big fan of the worms, so try roaches. There are many kinds of roaches, I use the species that don't climb glass. Good luck.

I don't think that would work so good since I have an all screen cage. Screen holes big enough that a roach can climb through! Bad enough we find Hornworms in the living room that got away!

House flies (not wild caught), moths, pinkies.

Definitely try roaches! Try placing non-climbing roaches in a cup, rather than free-range if your cage would allow for escapes.
Too bad he don't like silkworms, they're so easy to grow....

They're not anything like Superworm Beetles or any of those beetles or wood roaches you find? Cause he ignores them completely!! He does like Silkworm Moths, cold right now in NJ, otherwise, I catch wild moths too for him and my froggies.
SOMETIMES he eats them

I'm referring to exotic roaches, ie orange head roaches, discoids, etc. Personally, I wouldn't use any 'pest' type roaches (think of what they're eating, plus possible pesticides).
Have you tried offering roaches or crickets in a cup lately? Like Lele said, he might go for some crix if offered again.

Believe me, I am always trying all the "old" food again and again. I never give up. Always thinking, if he's hungry enough, he will eat.....but he doesn't!

you mention he stopped eating crickets at 1 y.o. - have you tried them again? He may relish them as a delicacy now!

Veileds are omnivores....ever tried some fruits or greens
or veggies? Some will even eat leaves of plants.

yup - did that. He looks at me with that Chameleon sneer like,"you're kidding, right?"

could there be some other problem? Any changes lately? New pet, new setup, are your UVB lights "current" - replace every 6 months?
What if you just let him fast for 2 or 3 days and then try.

Have you had him all these years? If so, your setup is probably OK since he is doing well otherwise. Maybe post your setup/supplementation, etc. for a quick check. Sometimes we have done somehting the same way for a long time out of habit, but a fresh set of (cyber)eyes might see something. just a thought.

No changes - has one of those uv/heat lights (powersun?) or equivalent. Cage is the same, hasn't been moved from the spot. He only gets moved in the summer, to outside when warm.
Yes, he has had no food for several days many times I don't feed my critters every day nor every other day for that matter.
Like I said, he's healthy in other ways. Still shows his colors, still slurps up his water when sprayed. Just eats when he decides to. And....not with your post lele, but, didn't I read once before that Chams don't eat pinkies? Or does that go with only some of them?

I could never feed a 4-legged animal to another animal (that is why I won't own a snake) but some people do feed them to their chams. I think it is mainly larger species and I don't think it is too frequent.

As for your cham, maybe he is cutting back due to age. If he is OK in every other way I wouldn't worry too much. But do make sure his UVB light are replaced regularly.
