A few newbie questions....

Tigergenesis Mar 28, 2005 10:28 AM

I'm having trouble finding playsand (I'm guessing it may be a bad time of year or something) - is there any kind of reptile sand that is safe to use until I can find playsand? I realize the reptile sands cost more, but I just want to know if any are okay to use (like Reptisand, Vitasand, etc).

Also, when shopping for birdseed what do I need to watch out for? So far it seems I need to avoid sunflower shells and cracked corn - is this correct? Or do I need to avoid all corn and even sunflower seeds (w/o shells)? I saw a bag of Pretty Bird Premium Finch seed mix and thought it might be okay?

Finally, I'm going to try the what Doug recommends for a hide (with the tubing, etc) - what dimensions do I need to look for in a tub? I was thinking of using the gladware disposables like Sunfox, but wasn't sure what size to go for.

I'd also appreciate any tips/advice anyone would like to offer that perhaps is not often found on caresheets or you've learned the hard way about, etc.

Thanks in advance!

the only sand i trust from a pet store is the reptisand. it is expensive but the particles are small and not jagged. sunflower seeds outside of the shell are fine. the shell is hard and can hurt them internally
