type of rocks - does it matter?

lele Mar 28, 2005 11:15 AM

When asked what we grow best in New England the reply is "rocks." Every spring I "weed" out more rocks than plants in my garden! So, living in the "Granite State" I have access to many rocks of all shapes and sizes. Many of them are dark but there are some lighter ones as well. I always see the store bought or collected in setups and wonder if there is any reason not to use the local rocks. My only thought is that if they are darker they may absorb too much heat for a beardie to lay on.

Has anyone used them? Any thoughts?

thanks,
lele

You can use any old rock, as long as it doesnt have sharp edges. You just have to clean and sterilize them really well. I have used rocks from my backyard in all sorts of setups, including my beardie cage.

Thanks, I didn't really think it would matter but thought I would ask. The cham forum members will attest to my weird obsessing at times

He is coming on Thursday - yippee!

my beardie has a rock I pulled out from the local creek...it's round so no sharp edges, retains heat well...I just sterilized it very well and gave it plenty of time after that to dry completely...

We have very pretty smooth, blue-gray beach rocks here (NH) and I have a favorite that I had used in another herp tank a long time ago. I bleached/disinfected today and they are "baking" in the sun
