big news in the GTP world

shhawke Mar 28, 2005 12:53 PM

i dont know how familier you all are of the laws in australia as far as owning animals... but the law has just changed... they can now own any exotic they want with a permit... and anyone can get the permit for $35.00

my cousin just told me last night... so i guess i will see how good of a cousin he is... and see if he can get me some GTP's from australia...

i was excited to hear about it... so i hope that some of u are happy too..

But this does not change the export laws. Only intended for the natives.

well if the locals can legally own the animals then it becomes much easier for them to export them... it may not me legal but who am i to judge...

its a step in the right direction

I wish this were the case. Oz has some of the most strict laws concerning native wildlife. There has been no legal export of native reptiles since the early 80's.....I think around 1982, but I'm not sure. I don't think their going to change export policies any time soon. We can all dream though.

but they also made it so the locals couldent own the exotics as well, and that happened at the same time... and after talking to my cousin again today... he says they are also talking about lifting the export ban, but it would be controlled... as he explained it to me........ they would have to buy an export permit but its only like $10... but by doing that they can controll the exporting...

another intresting fact that i read... when they import animals they keep them in constant quarantine for 5 years the then destroy the holding facility and build a new one... they do this for obvious reasons...

i dont think this will happen real soon but they are in the process of changing policies and this is one that we can keep our fingers crossed on...

Its a shame they didn't take cats, rabbits, rats, caine toads in consideration.
That's why they are so rediculously strict now.

i see your point but those problems started a long time ago... they need the strick emport laws they have because the have suce a nice ecosystem... almost any wildlife can live their...

but the problems they have now with mice and rats ect started back when people had to use ships to get to the continent
