Anyone get out to southern Cali Herpn' yet?

crotaphytusman Mar 28, 2005 05:59 PM

I know this is a little off subject but, I am planning a trip to southern California in the next few weeks and I just wanted to know how the weather has been. Anyone get out yet and start looking? I am looking for some cool Bicinctores Collards and chucks just for pictures (starting a website for California Herps). I have some great looking Collaris collards right now and they are enough for me but I would love a Chuck or two some day. Here is a picture from last years trip.

if you mean far southern, ive been in P.V. already, if you mean north southern, i have been there too. The weather is so-so. I very random. Today in torrance, it was raining this morning, stopped midday and got hot, then this evening its very very windy. Its been breezy along the coast, very few rains, and nice warm sun from morning to about 2 oclock, then it gets a little windy. More northern it is very wamr, around 75-80 degrees around 12 oclock, then it gets windy but still has sunshine(in chuckwalla territory) and south as in near sandiego it is sort of warm, around murrietta and temecula its been around 70 degrees give or take 10 degrees. Kinda random right now, wouldn't you agree? nick.

I was down in Baja last week with friends. We caught a big female chuck in Catavinia and saw a couple of others on a rock pile. By the time we made it to the pile, the chucks were in hiding; they never re-emerged.

I just got back from death valley. the weather was fairly decent. the desert iguanas are starting to come out, and while i didnt have time to make an effort for chucks, i suspect they could be found out, at least near their crevices. the wildflowers are spectacular, but that has clogged the park with many visitors. also scored a coachwhip cruising across the road near furnace creek, so the snakes are starting to move. the utas are already starting to drop eggs, pretty much every female i saw was gravid and saw a few apparently digging nest burrows.

Hey man,
Yes I've been out a few times, the Chucks in my area are out, as are the bicinctores, and found a DOR Desert Horned Lizard. (grrr) If it means anything, I have seen mostly younger individuals, < 8 inches. Possibly getting a growth start before their larger counterparts rise and eat everything else. Right now seems a good time to get them in hand, as they aren't always so nice when the weather is hotter. Thats a nice pic you have. I haven't seen such a whitish mottling on a Chucks back. anyway, I did take pics expect them back from Wal-Mart soon, and will post when I get them. If you get out Apple Valley way, let me know, maybe we can herp. Talk to you soon.
