new emeralds-need feeding tips

mrlizardtx Mar 28, 2005 06:36 PM

I just got a pair of 3-4 ft. emeralds a few days ago. Last night the male appeared to be hunting so I threw a medium sized rat in the cage. He seemed to check it out but never took it. I even dangled it in front of him. Since they were in a smooth sided cage where the rat couldn't reach the snake, I left it in overnight. But it was still there this morning, so I took it out. Any tricks to getting them to feed?

How about a little background on them and some info on your set-up? Emeralds generally won't eat unless the environmental conditions are suitable and they are well acclimated.

The cage is a little more dressed up now.

Try running the feeder under hot fossit water. Fresh killed of course and pat dry with a paper towel. Emeralds will hone in on the heat and nail the item. Make sure to turn out all the lights in your snake room for at least 30 minutes before trying to feeding and that will put them in hunt mode. Try to slowly move the feeder from side to side to get their attention. From there if you offer somthing hot they will nail it without question, provided they are hungary. Good luck!
