mating kingsnakes?

buddygrout Mar 28, 2005 06:48 PM

Is biting but not constricting foreplay? My cal. kings do some biting and I'm afraid to leave them for long. I would like babies but don't want ti lose or injure a snake.
My gray banded kings are getting along great. Will they also try to eat each other?

...many snakes do bite as a sort of foreplay. Actually the male's trying to get a firm grip on the female. If the female is doing the biting then watch them more carefully. I have Cal kings that I got for the simple reason that a friend called and said "come and get them, the female ate my albino". So I have to watch her like a hawk even with a larger male. I must wait for her to shed and only then will she be a little more receptive. Still, the male has to hold her by biting her so she won't bite back and possibly take things further. It gets hairy with that female for sure.
If you're in doubt, don't leave them alone (together) too long or overnight. Only when you can be there to supervise.
Good luck!

What kind are the snakes breeding in the pic? Looks like a florida king and a amel.

The male "normal" is the only snake I kept from a breeding of a female Pinellas co. king and a Tampa (Hillsborough co.). The amel is, well, if my info is right, from a line of snakes found in the very same area as the Tampa (Hillsborough co) male. Quite a few years ago a gravid female was collected there and laid 3 good eggs and several slugs. One of the neos that hatched was an albino. Of course, I have no real evidence that mine is realted to that animal except a few people's accounts and my own conclusions. Just my own little project. You know.

Is there any more info on that male being a new line of amel? How long ago was this amel found and who produced the one you have??

Sorry I don't mean to be nosey. You don't have to go into details, I am just curious to possibly pick up some amels from that line myself.

Please email me if you feel it is better to keep this private.

...the amel is the female here. Anyway, if I get any hets, I'll bring 'em to Daytona.
I will not sell any or even hint that they are anything new or "pure". You know me, I have my doubts..
I don't doubt the story on the amel baby from the wc a few years back, just cannot ever be sure this female is related to that snake. So they'll stay here, or maybe to someone who isn't strictly a "purist"
I'm sorry if I said too much to lead anyone to think differently. I will also not cross any of the snakes in the group to any others in my collection. Like I said, just a little project for me to fiddle with.

I will wait for her next shed then put them together and watch. I have a large Fl king female that tries to eat every male I put with her. She also eats the rats when my other snakes don't eat. I think it is time for her to diet.
