Update on yellow rat bought from Terry Parks.

sullman Mar 28, 2005 07:36 PM

I haven't been on the boards lately because I have been so busy!! Anyway I bought a yellow rat snake from Terry Parks around May of last year. This guy was very small and thin. Maybe 13 inches long and as thin as a pencil! Since that time he has grown to 27 inches long and is getting very thick! If I had to guess he went from pencil thin to about the thickness of a magic marker.. He is still a little wild when I pick him up and always tries to get away from me but has never struck at me or musked me once..although he has tail rattled sometimes.

Sometimes he is settled and will allow me to hold him for 10 mins other times he gets crazy and trashes around...still working on getting him settled down but each snake has his/her own temperment so who knows if he will ever settle down. When he gets nuts I put him back in his home since I don't want to stress him out..

He is starting to lose his saddles and clearly has 4 faint stripes down his back and is getting to be a very nice yellow.I did have him in a 10 gallon tank but he quickly outgrew that in a matter of 2 months. He is now eatting 2 small hoppers every 7.

I'll take some pictures when I get a chance and post them sometime during the week. I am thinking about getting a female once this guy is breeding age. I do have an adult female anery motley corn snake but I have no idea what the heck would come out of those eggs..lol

Wow! 2 hoppers! I must be underfeeding my snake then. He's about the same size as yours (28 inches last I measured) and I am feeding 2 fuzzies every 7 days. I think they are fuzzy mice. They are small and kind of have fur but are the step above pinkies. I bought 50 of them last month and still have a good many left. Perhaps I should feed that 2x a week?

Melisssss, if you think you are under feeding yours, offer your snake a third mouse. If the snake doesn't feel full, then she will eat it. Don't worry about getting bigger mice until you are just about out of the ones that you have.

I also have some of Mr. Park's Yellow Rat Snakes. Terry is a great guy to deal with. I also got a pair of orange morph Texas Rats, a Texas Bairds, and a Gulf Hammock Rat. All of them got to me in very good health. My Yellows are a year older then yours. They have not formed their stripes yet, but I can see them starting to develop. They are great looking snakes. Maybe you can post a photo of your snake for us.

These are pictures of my snake when I first got him. He hasn't changed all that much. I did give him a big fuzzy yesterday that he grabbed and ate. I usually feed every Friday. I knew two was ok to feed at once but I though 3 might be a no no. The Vet said to feed him 2 every 3 days which seemed like an awful lot of feeding to me. I am not to sure about this vet after having dealt with him and a sick Gecko.

Nice glade. What about pictures of your Yellow? I will try to post one of mine tonight.

I'll post some pics later tonight. This guy is a pig.He would take down 4 large fuzzies if I let him so I decided to move him up to the hoppers since he is thick enough to handle them I thought...after he takes down the 2nd he is still stimulated and looking for more but I refuse to give him any more then that right now...

My King snake is even worse and would definately eat as much as I gave him I feel.. He is my most aggressive feeder and after feeding him I need to wash my hands of all rodent odors or he starts flicking his tounge at my hands... I learned from a past mistake..lol.

My corn snake will eat one adult mouse maybe once every 3 weeks even though I offer her one every week except when she is shedding...
