How do I know if she's a Rankins?

Aeromeggy Mar 28, 2005 08:06 PM

I bought two baby beardies at a herp show in September. They came from different breeders. At first they grew at about the same rate, then it was ibvious the one was getting bigger faster. Sonny, the one who is growing well, seems fine. Morgan, however, seems to have stopped growing. She is about 10-12 inches. She eats fine and feces is clear of parasites. Could she be a rankins? I'm not sure of any distinguishing features of a rankins besides small size.

Here's something I found... I saw one website once that had pictures showing the difference between a bearded dragon and a rankins, but I can't find that... althoguh i'm still looking. http://forum.kingsnake.com/beard/messages/76093.html
Maybe that gives a little information.

Are the beardies housed togther? If it turns out she is not a rankins then you arae probably seeing the age old problem people encounter when trying to raise beardies together.

Stress can sometimes be very subtle and tough to see. We humans tend to personalize things and if we see are beardies sitting on top of each other to bask we asssume they "like" each other. When in reality one beardie is assuming a dominant position.

Usually what happens is both beardies will grow fine at first and then the more dominant beardie grows much more rapidly and the other does not. Think back to elemtry or middle school....if you were afraid of the school bully and suddenly he sat down next to you during lunch you would probably lose your appetite. It is the same idea, if one beardie is intimidated by another, although no outward signs of aggression or stress may be shown they will frequtnly eat a little less (or a lot less, with time) than they usually would, give up the best basking spots, and generally just be stressed. This condition can lead to illness and ultimately death.

If it turns out your beardie isn't a rankins you should try seperating the two and i bet your little one would start groiwng again. Even if it is a rankins you might want to seperate them anyways because of isze difference, but im not sure as i do not know much about rankins.

Good luck with everything!

The two were in fact housed together for awhile. However, once we noticed the one was growing faster, we seperated them. They have been seperated for a few months now and the smaller just seems to have stopped growing.

Here is a pic of Morgan...maybe this will help tell if she's Rankins.

She looks like an inland to me, but then again i dont know much about the rankins so i am not a good say.

How long ago did you seperate them, it can take awhile t put on significant weight gain.

It might be worthwhile bringing a fecal sample to the vet just in case there are other reasons for her slow growth....

also, maybe you can post those pics on the "what kind" forum and ask them?

Looks like a normal beardie to me, not a rankins. Rankins have different patterns on their backs.

Here is a pic of a rankins:
