A question for the experienced true "redtail" keepers out there...

afoll Mar 28, 2005 11:18 PM

Are you able to look at a baby boa and have a good idea what they will look like as they age/ reach maturation, based on their appearence now? Is there a predictable pattern/ general trend they follow or is it just more random? When do they start to get into their true adult color? Are you ever really surprised as to how they progress? Does anyone have any pictures that show how their boas have changed over the years.

thanks for the information in advance,
andy

It really does depend on what type of boa you are talking about. I have seen really dull looking normals as babies turn out to be incredibly bright colored animals as they grew. I believe, I am learning what to look for now. If you are looking at Hypos, I believe the lighter and cleaner and more colorfull as a young baby the more impressive they will look as adults...it all depends what you are looking for. Some people love dark headed ones while others like the soft pastel airbrush look. Some like bold heavy red and some like reds with yellows or orange. Andy

Andy,It's a total mystery, that's why boa's still command a high price because really beautiful animals are still saught after. For example look at this suri.I got her because of her deep purple grapish color.Heck I even named her grapesoda.A year latter she starts looking pastelish.

GRAPEISH PURPLE

PASTELISH

I actually had one back in 98, it was sold to me as a Guyana. It was so purple it was mind boggleing! I still remember as I would hold it you could actually see the purple color wash though the body..it was the strangest thing. Andy
