Humidity needs of baby Leopard tortoise

wahjeh Mar 29, 2005 12:57 PM

I've just acquired a baby Leopard toroise and was told to keep him on damp substrate, even though I've read this species requires low humidity as adults. The rational was that baby leopards spend a lot of time in damp burroughs and are susceptible to dehydration if kept in a dry terrarium. Any husbandry suggestions would be appreciated.

I know you have a leopard and not a sulcata, but check out sulcata station web site. They have a great article on hatchling failure syndrome. I lost a leopard hatchling to this but have since raised two sulcata hatchlings successfully after adding more humidity. Good luck.

I raise babies leopards. I keep them on dry paper towel, and bath them 2-3 times a week for 10-15 minutes. They do fine off that.
