what are the negatives to feeding chams non-live food? (if it takes them)
Chameleon are attracted to the movement of their prey. So therefore will probably not eat any dead food unless they are very hungry i dont know about that. But I wouldnt suggest or ever feed dead food. The dead food cannot be gutloaded which is another negative.
ok, i understand that. I was asking in case somehow one did. what if the insect was gutloaded before?
btw, I'm new to the forum, hi
also I understand that larger species take some vegetation, is this not true for jacksons?
I think what you're referring to is how veiled chameleons are omnivorous. This is not the case with Jacksons. They are insectivores.
Personally, I've only used live prey with my Jacksons in the past, but I've heard others say that they use pre-killed prey. I don't think there would be any issues other than actually getting your chameleon to take pre-killed.

thanks, I was thinking maybe using a vibrating dish?
...and that it is freshly killed or had been frozen. As soon as decomposition begins bacteria and other detrivores will take up residence and you won't want to introduce that to your chams system.
Did you have a particular situation in mind?

gotya, so would refigeration be bad or would it just not last as long? Also, is there a website I can go to that lists edible insects with their fat content, ect.
No, it won't keep too long that way. Are you asking this b/c you don't want to handle live feeders for your cham? I would think with your user name of "millipede" that wouldn't be an issue! lol!
Do you have a cham yet, or are you in the research stage? Keep in mind, that even though veiled's will eat some fruits and veggies it might be difficult to get it to eat (and stay healthy) strictly on these foods. You would need to pay close attention to nutrition and make sure it got enough of all the right foods. That's why gutloading crix, roaches, etc. is a better way to go - they will eat just about anything you put in front of them
as for a bug chart, yes, here you go...

you'd be correct about my name, I actually love bugs. I used to have a millipede who ufourtunatly recently passed. I'm still in the research stages and I know it would be a challenge and may not work out. I'm planning on varying the diet as much as possible, I know with reptiles nutrition is exteremly important espcailly since I an iguana. I also plan on gut loading with collards and fish food does that seem ok enough to use?
