NY state - vet visit required for testing?

improvius Mar 29, 2005 04:23 PM

I called a reputable vet that works with reptiles to see if I could bring in some stool samples for analysis. I was told that "legally," they couldn't do anything unless they physically had the animal there to examine it. I was hoping to just have some tests run and not have to pony up $50 for each snake! Not to mention stressing all the snakes by bagging and dragging them to the vet.

Anyway, does anyone know anything about this supposed "law" that prevents me from simply bringing in stool samples?

BTW, there is nothing noticeably wrong with any of them. We are getting some new ones in this week, and I just figured this would be a good time to do tests all around.

why do you need all of your ball pythons checked? they are not on the banned list.

I am not quite sure of what you mean or need? please give us more info as I live in NY state too.

BPs and other small pythons. And I don't HAVE to get them checked. It just seems like a good idea right now, as we will be getting 4 new ones this week. I was just hoping to get fecal tests done to make sure we don't have anything that could spread amongst our snakes. For our peace of mind.

I do not know the laws in NY State but that sounds like a bunch of crap to me. I have sent stool samples to Veterinarians in other states including Dr Roger J. Klingenberg DVM the author Of Understanding Reptile Parasites and was only charged for the diagnosis. If I were you I would look for another Veterinarian. The link I am inclosing is for New York State so hopefully you will find one close to you.

Good luck,

That is a bunch of crap. I live in NYS and whenever I need a fecal done for a herp, I just bring the sample in tell them that I want a smear and a float and they charge me $10.00. The office calls me with the results in a day or two. Find a different vet. Good luck.
