HHFrog Mar 29, 2005 05:41 PM

I am looking into possibly getting my first monitor lizard.
I have experience keeping other herps but want to try a monitor.
What species would be best for me?
i dont want anything that gets very big
im thinking about an argus or savanna.
i havent done much research yet, im starting here
Any Suggestions?

i would definetly look into ackies. Dont let the price scare you away, they will be worth every penny. i have 2 acks and have never been happier. I have a sav which is aptly named dog since he just sits around all day...and thats all i can really say. I would look into tree monitors as well, but experience would be very helpful in their care.

Savs are one of the larger breeds. Lots of girth as they get older. Argus probably min 3.5 to 4 ft and fairly to largely energetic. If you want small these aint it. You might want to consider what type of temperment your looking for also. Does this breed hide a lot? Or do I want it to be interactive with me, ie.. display only or more than just diplay. A lot of people like ackies, but I've never had one. There's also a lot of mid sized breeds that are very nice. If you do the research on the different breeds and make an informed decision I think your likely to be happier. Hope this helps.

Argus are a medium to large sized species growing to 5ft for males, females are noticeably smaller.
A breed is a term for different versions of the same exact species used commonly with dogs.
