Trivia question for everyone in the know,...

BrianSmith Jul 09, 2003 05:45 PM

Who are the biggest python and boa breeders in the world? Does anyone know? And if possible, how big? How many breeders in their colonies? How much do they produce anually in terms of sheer numbers? And I do not mean any cheesy importers or brokers that just move the snakes of another. I mean genuine, bonifide breeders. As I intend to be the biggest breeder in the world in due time I want to know who I'm gunning for.

I will be buying some, you seem like a straight shooter, that I can trust, and if your selling I will have to buy. And with as many snakes as you have I think your well on your way.

we really don't believe that you will ever have as many snakes as some of the big breeders have in one room of their facilities. but good luck trying, it's all fun

Okay,..... It really isn't all that hard you know. But thanks for the good luck wishes anyway. And yes, it is very fun.

Thats probably a good start to answer your question. Or where you just asking because its you?

BrianSmith Jul 10, 2003 10:17 PM

I don't know the people at NERD, and may never. I know Bob pretty well but never counted the breeders at his places. It looked like a tremendous amount, I would guess at least a thousand breeders. Under the right circumstances it should take me roughly 2 years to have about that capacity, and maybe another 2 years to raise any of those that are hatchlings or newborns.

The Barkers at one point had over 1000 animals. I'm not sure what their current total is. It may actually be higher, as they've mostly gotten out of the big-snake business and are concentrating on more manageable species like balls, bloods, etc. I'm sure you could ask them.

BrianSmith Jul 10, 2003 06:09 PM

Yes, I know of the Barkers but have never had the honor of meeting them in person (yet). It's certainly on my to-do list (amongst other things) as I admire them and what they have done greatly. On the rare days when things are harder than usual in our animal maintainence and my wife becomes a little discouraged I tell her, "Com'mon hon,.. just think, you will be the next Tracey Barker." and her spirits and resolve rise and strengthen. But yes, I was aware of their past usual numbers and of Bob's approximate numbers,. but I was wondering if there was someone in Europe or Canada or some other part of the world that I didn't know about that may run many thousands of breeders at any given time. If not, maybe my calculations of 5 years is a little long.
