basking question

seanpkeen Mar 29, 2005 10:39 PM

alright,

i got a basking site set up for my bosc, and the heat bulb i bought burnt out. I replaced it with a normal black lite bulb and im getting the same temperature reading. Would their be any problems later on down the light with the black lite bulb?

Why would u even want to run a black light in the cage on a reg. basis? I have heard that black lights let off some radiation but not sure if that is true...go and get an halogen incadescent bulb and be done with it.

radiation perhaps, in the "ultra-violet radiation" part of "UV" but since reptile enthusiasts spend hundreds of thousands every year buying special bulbs with types of UV in them, i would highly doubt that this is a "harmful" radiation. radiation is just a term for anything being "radiated" out of.. well, anything. i use blacklights on many reptiles that i want 24/7 heat on, it simply does not provide a night/day light cycle. blacklights are even sold FOR reptiles, its harmless.

The thing with running black light is that it can cause damage to the eyes of humans and other animals with devloped eyes. I run incadesant and the surface of the basking spot is 130 F. That must be a really powereful black light buld.
