What is your best piece of cage furnishing for basking.

Below there is a thread that involves this kinda. I was wondering in a more direct way what you guys and gals have found to be the best display spot in your cages. What one piece will get your snake to sit out in the open or at least part way. And if you can, post some pics.

In my opion it is a thick piece of a branch about 3-5 inches thick and flat that works the best. I have spent a ton of money on pretty pieces of wood only to find it gets very little use. I then went out and got some drift wood on the Florida beach that was free and worked very well. It is about 4 inches wide for the most part and seems to do the trick where other wood has failed. So lets hear your ideas and get some pics. I will try to get some pics up as well.

Thanks Jason

I think this is an interesting and important question/post.

I do think it's species specific, perhaps even subspecies specific in relation to ratsnakes.

For my Gonyosoma I believe their favorite perch is the end of a tubular piece of cork-bark. If you angle it into the cage slightly so that the top of that tube is fairly flat they'll sort of pile up on it. I believe this provides them more areas to grip and possibly an escape route.

On a similar note, if you take a few 1" thick branches that form "V's" and place them together so those V's form a cup they'll pile up on their as well.

BTW, thanks for linking me to your website during my everglades post from a couple of weeks ago. I was not able to get the site to work with the Mozilla browser I use but dug out Internet Explorer last night so I could view it.

I enjoyed your pics and would probably be interested in some of your hatchlings that will be heterozygous for hypomelanism.

I'd like to ask about the everglades cage in the photo below. What is it made of, what is it sealed with, and how long has it held up?

Thanks.

The cage is in the pic was made of standard plywood. It had a glass side and a screen side as well as two wooden sides. It was originally a four foot long cage but I stood it on end for the glades and was hapy that I did. As far of how old it was. It was old when I got it(5-6years). And lasted about four years until my ceiling fell on it in the hurricanes. I had already got the snakes out but the glass front and screen side needed to be replaced.

I sealed it with a clear cost wood sealant then painted it a couple times with a latex paint. I don't know what was done before I had it but it never showed signs of rotting. I gave it to a friend cuz I am lazy and nice. LOL

I would like to put another one together and screw pieces ofcork to the sides as well as have limbs inside. With some supports below them I think the cork would do well. And of course silk plants all over for that jugle look.
