Eatin' Eggs

holmesese Mar 30, 2005 08:03 AM

My female Giant Day Gecko layed some infertile eggs several weeks back, I never noticed them in the enclosure until I noticed the male eating them. The pair has now bred and I am expecting some fertile eggs in the next week or so, will the male just as readily consume the fertile eggs?

Exactly, if they are fertile the female will guard them. Usually it's the female who eats infertile eggs to regain the material that she had used to make them. If your female is too small to fight back the male then you may need to seperate them while she is laying eggs. It's best to only breed adults that are similar in size.

i had the same exact thing happen with my first infertile clutch from one of my uroplatus pietschmanni....one day the inferts were clinging to a leaf, next day nowhere to be found.

might sound nasty that they're eating their own eggs, but it makes complete sense when you think of the enormous expense females pay for producing eggs.

well even after the eggs hatch i like to put the shells back in the cage in a clean spot. my day geckos will usually always eat the shells. i havent tried it w/ my leaftails though.
