I'm actually using a liquid electric tape but if you didn't know you'd think it was pvc cement. It's potent stuff but it wears off pretty quick. How long after I can't smell it is safe?

I take an empty coffee or soup can, make sure it's clean, and then toss some crickets in there with a piece of vegetable or fruit.
Then I use a rubberband to hold some screen over the open end of the can.
Place the can screen side down over the area in question and see if the crickets die.
I don't know how accurate or ethical this is, but it provides me peace of mind.
Honestly, once I can't smell it the crickets always live.
