Kisatchie size question

cowtownherper Mar 30, 2005 11:47 AM

My Slowinski, Kisatchie, Texas corn is an 03 from a gravid wild caught female. He isnt growing near as fast as my other 03 pure corns. Is it common for wild caughts to grow at a slower pace than captive bred? I would assume snakes in the wild would grow slower, but he is on the same feeding schedule as my other snakes. How big should I expect him to get?

kisatchie corns are usually very large as adults...some reaching legnths of around seven feet. i don't know all of the details but if you say your corn is wild caught and isn't growing very fast...it could have worms or it could just be a slow grower. if he is keeping a steady body weight he should be fine.size comes in time.
Oh and by the way i saw that you said kisatche corns were also called "texas corns" actually they are native to louisiana...not sure if they have populations in texas.

Although Kisatchie corns are named after the Kisatchie National Forest in Lousiana, they DO occur in Texas. I do alot of road crusing and have found a handful over the past few years. I live in Brazos Co., TX (E. Central Texas) and this is considered to be the furthest western edge of their range. I, as well as many local herpers, have worked closely with Texas A&M University providing blood samples for the DNA research that lead to their reclassification as E. slowinskii.

In the last month I have caught 3... the largest (and one of the biggest I personally have ever seen) was around 52".... I have never heard of them reaching 7'. In fact ~7' is the state record for Texas Ratsnake.... I'd have to say that a JUMBO Kisatchie would be around maybe 5'.

I've had many babies in the past from eggs hatched out of WC gravid females, but I've never grown them up.

They are great snakes and quite hard to find here on the western edge of their range....
