Millet / Bird Seed Bedding

dragonfliz79 Mar 30, 2005 02:34 PM

I heard a few people use this for bedding. I want to try it, but every pet store I go to only carries bird seed with sunflower seeds. I was wondering what brand you guys use and where do you buy it from? Is it wild bird seed or pet bird seed?

Thanks,

Hi Niki, you can get white millet at most any feed store. The stores that sell chicken and livestock feed. You usually have to buy it in a 50lb bag.

Hope this helps!

You could also try any store that clientels to wild bird watches. I bought a 6 lb bag at a store called "Wild Birds Unlimited".

I used to buy from a wild bird store as mentioned above. The best place where I live now is actually primarily an organic garden store. The bird place sold 20 lb bags for $8 and this place is 25 lb for $17 - more expensive, but less junk seed (sunflower hulls).

I bought two 10 pound bags of wild bird seed from Lowes, sifted all the sunflower seeds and anything else that wouldn't fit through the strainer holes, then froze it all over night

Hi!

I'm very interested of changing the sand substrate of my uros. But I'm really scared that my uros will get bowels block (Don't know any real (english)name to this, but I think that "block in a bowels" make clear what I mean ) when using seed substrate.
Is this a common disease when using millet seeds?

What about mites? Does seed substrate expose my uros to them more surely than sand substrate?

The English word you're looking for is an impaction, but we know what you mean! I've been using white millet seed for nearly two years with no problems at all. They eat it a little, but not much on purpose. The seeds are so smooth, they pass through. If they crack the seed before swallowing, it gets digested, so no problems there, either.

Some folks have problems with little moths in the millet, but they're more an annoyance than a problem. You should be able to prevent that by freezing the millet to kill any larvae in the seed.

Thanks! That really helped me alot, because all that sand (35kg/77lb) is totally pissing me off and I think that the seeds are lighter, so I don't need it as much.
