Update on rescue Retic.... good news

ZPD Mar 30, 2005 05:00 PM

Well...the guy called me back and has agreed to let me take him. So thats good. I will take some pics tonight and post them for sure...wait till you see him....

Questions: What do I do first, he is underweight, has stuck shed, and injured upper lip from screen top cage. Not forgetting to mention he is vicious. (scared and pissed of is probably more accurate) I was thinking of giving him alot of food and some privacy, then after week or so start with the shed, then work on the lip if need be. Should I prioritize it differently?

I was thinking of putting him in a large rubbermaid tub with lots of holes drilled in it. I figured I would put heat under one end, and include a large water dish with paper towel for substrate. He is in a glass tank w/ screen lid, I thought a transparent tupperware would provide him with some privacy and security. Almost forgot to mention a hide.

If he is about 3ft and skinny as a rail could I start with some small-med rats? I think I understand that retics are ok with eating larger meals as opposed to boas, true?

Any other suggestions are welcome...Stay tuned for pics tonight...

Hello, It's good to here that the snake will be in better care. My thoughts on feeding/hydration are that I would put him in a very moist/humid cage for a day with a large water bowl just to start the rehidrating prosess and i would also soak him for a while if he does not soak on his own. Then the next day I would feed him a small rat. I my experience feeding emanciated snake to large of meals causes a great amout of stress. But I have to admit this experience has come mostly with Boas and smaller pythons. Best of luck to you and it's good to here that the snake is getting a better home.

Yea, don't feed it too much. It is not used to alot of food apparently and that could casue stress like winslow said. I would start off with soemthing about the size of the biggest part of the body and feed it only once the last meal has just about disapeared (the bulge).
