what is the reason for the ban? I know you and I have discussed this before, but what needs to be remembered is that when exotic organisms (mantids to snakes to wild boars to plants!) are introduced into a system where they are not indigenous and have no natural predators (insects, pathogens, etc.) they can cause very serious problems to the indigenous species and ecosystems. It is typically only a small percentage that do, but they more than make up for the ones that don't. The aquatic plant milfoil is absolutely devastaing lakes in NH (and elsewhere) and it was introduced from poeple dumping aquariums down toilets and/or into bodies of water. The brown tree snake in Guam has wiped out virtually all the bird species on the island.
Sorry, Victor, don't mean to be so serious here but I think you might recall that the issue of invasive species (mainly plants and parasitic insects - those that attack Lepidoptera) is a "passion" of mine. The "remedy" for many of these outbreaks are the use of biocides which impact other species int he system, such as native birds, reptiles, fish, etc.
I know YOU wouldn't let a mantid escape
and it possibly would not have a negative impact, but the laws are there as a prevention. that said...I agree that some may seem extraneous but if you look at the impacts of some (go to APHIS website, invasivespecies.gov, etc.) the devastation cannot be ignored.
OK - I'm stepping off my soapbox
