Please help! - Mold on eggs

lizzzardlady Mar 30, 2005 08:42 PM

Hello,

For anyone who has experience incubating gecko eggs... what should be done if an egg gets mold? And is it most likely to have damaged the fetus? (ie: should I discard the eggs or incubate them?)

Thanks,
Michele

If they're molded, then they're infertile. That's been my experience everytime, and what I've always been told. So just throw them out.

Infertile eggs will mold in the first few days/weeks. If your eggs are fertile, it means the humidity is too high. I've had good luck with gently wiping the mold away with a moist paper towel, and lowering the humidity when I had a mold problem the first time. It never happened after, except with infertile eggs. Some people use foot powder (I don't really know what kind, or how it works exactly) but yes, I keep incubating the eggs until you're really sure they're dead.

In my experience mold does not mean the eggs are infertile. It could be that your humidity is too high. In which case try dusting a little athlete's foot powder on the egg with a q-tip. Make sure you dust all the way around the egg and place th egg back exactly the way you found it. I have successfully hatched the two eggs that molded due to high humidity. No problems with the geckos- they were as healthy as could be. It was kind of difficult to find the powder. I had luck at Walmart.

Good Luck
