borneo feeding problems

chaoscat Mar 30, 2005 10:29 PM

Well, my other two borneos are doing great, but these two new females are being terrible about eating.

They are both very shy, and will not strike at _anything_ unlike my other two. I've tried leaving food in their cages overnight, with no response. I've gotten one to eat a live fuzzy mouse I dropped in the cage, and the other has taken two meals, but has now been refusing.

My question is, how long is too long to let babies (cb 2004) go without food?

How about adults? I have two nonfeeding adults as well.

Their temps are in the low 80s, they all have tight fitting, dark hide boxes, plenty of water. There is no visible reason why they are refusing food.

Try raising the humidity. The ambient temps can be bumped up also.82"-85" Hot and humid is the key to healthy bloods.

Have they just been taking live food items the times that you have gotten them to eat?

One took a live fuzzy after not eating for an entire month, but now won't take anything, live or thawed.

What are you using to cage these guys again?IS the hot spot at a low 80 degree.Hot spot should be in the high 80's or low 90's and the ambient should be in the low 80's.Also bump up the humidity to 80% and see what happens.I think you hot spot might not be hot enough for them.Just a thought.Did you also try a fresh kill with slit in his skin?Sometimes that will turn them on.

I'm using sterilites, same as I use for every other borneo or sumatran baby I have here. All of them have tight fitting, dark hide spots, too.

Hot spot temps right now are 84.6 and ambient is around 78. I have tried prekilled, but not one broken open.

78 degree's is border line low, and how low do you think it is at night.Maybe they wont eat because they don't have enough heat to help digest his food.Just a thought. Are you running heat tape to heat it up, and is it on a thermostat or reostat?.
