tree frog setup question

parselmouth Mar 31, 2005 05:38 AM

Ok guys, never kept tree frogs here is my plan...i bought a 65 gallon tank (2 feet high, 18 inches wide, 3 feet long). The entire back wall of the tank is a water fixture made of lots of drift wood, great stuff foam, latex, and a bed a beast type bedding... it looks really sharp... the bottom, is a combination of gravels, live mosses, buckwheat hulls...this tank is LOADED with plants... Basically the tank is a chunk of rainforest. One third of the bottom of the tank is a shallow pool, but has exposed cyprus knees so that they can climb out if they happen to jump in... so after setting this up, i decided i wanted to put an animal in it (wasnt my original plan).. and i like the whites tree frogs or red eyes.. Which would do better in this type of environment.. I have kept dendrobates, phyllobates, and mantella frogs with great success. So i just have a few specefic questions... How many adults can i keep in this size setup??.. also how humid of an environment do they like.. Right now i have a custum acrylic hood that i've built a misting system into.. do they need more ventilation (would i be better of with a screen lid), also what is a good day and night temperature for them... Would i get sufficient heat from my power compact lighting.. or should i add an aqaurium heater to my resevoir... thanks alot in advance

probably white's treefrogs and a screen top and 5 frogs would do well cuz for 1 frog 20 gallons and an additional 10 for every frog you add... around 60-80% humidity a good day temperature is 80-ish and night temperature about 75 and dont add an aquarium heater to the water the lamps will make the tank warm which would make the water slightly cooler which you want

thst sounds like an awsome setup. I'd really like to see some pictures.

the only problem with whites is they love to squish delicate plants! Mine have sucessfully killed off some very hardy orchids (i swear they intentionally sat for hours on it!) and a lovley fern that was kind of small and never had a chance.

maybe a few amazon milk frogs would be interesting. if you've had experence with darts, i dont think these guys would give you too much trouble.

I am interested in treefrogs and wanted to use a 60 watt red light bulb for heat at night. Tank will be a 30 gallon high tank.
I was afraid a light would dry them up. Do you use an incandescent light if so have you had any problems because if not going to use this method.
Thanks.
