apodora eggs again

hakuin Mar 31, 2005 12:19 PM

I have 3 CBB papuan pythons, the smaller of which became gravid this year (they are almost ten years old.....all of which i have had them for). Heres the good part.........

2 infertile(top left, probably coming out of the incubator very soon), 14 fertile, one suspect to go either way (bottom right)

ovultaion on feb 14th 2005...that means these babies, hopefully, will be those that are concieved on that special day.

perhaps the strangest of many strange behaviors exhibited by apodora is that they invert many times during the breeding season, and sometime before, which has thrown off breeders who think they have a gravid female and make the mistake of treating her as one and raising the temp, removing the male, both of which sums to their downfall.
my female laid the egg in the bottom right of the 1st photo 2 nights ago and then all the rest of the eggs last night...mmm, i think she was pissed i was checking in on her two nights ago. hope you all enjoyed, i will be summing up my observations in a small paper with some other photos which i will post later.

by the way. the scars on the female are the result of an unfortunate event involving thermal burns THIS PAST SUMMER! after nine years of stunning perfection she now has a blemish......but now i love her even more........also perhaps the stress involved in that accident played a role on her developing follicles this year and not last year where every condition was the same for breeding preparation.

Congrats just doesn't sum it up. That is simply amazing. I'm sure you're very happy with that result. I have a couple of their cousins, a pair of 5 year old olive pythons, of which the female may or may not be gravid. She's probably too young still, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway. I witnessed what I thought was ovulation (pictured below) back in January, but have yet to see any results of it. If she did ovulate, it's doubtful that anything will come of it after this much time. Anyway, congrats again on that awesome clutch. I wish you the absolute best of luck with your incubation results.

Congratulation! What a pleasure to see those eggs. Now I can't wait to see those little worms coming up to the light.
I observe mine copulate another time, but no ovulation yet.
We will see.

I cant take that much credit for it though because i might not have been able to do it without the help of:
-Dr. Alistair Chapnick (my vet brother)whose decision it was to buy the papuans in the first place and who took care of them for 4 years.
-Kevin at NERD who told me how important it was to have a long long cooling period.
-Dave Barker who took the time to answer many of my questions.(and Tracy last year elucidated the follicle production thing for me).
-Yasser who helped me when I thought there was a problem with her laying a few days ago.
-my roommate, who has not asked about the bag (opaque with rats in it) in the freezer.

I should be done with my notes by wed and will post them here. Just some info.....the eggs were pretty big, several were between 100 and 111g and 3.25 and 3.75 inches. Also........my other female seems to be developing follicles too...so i put the male with her last night. It will be raining papuans in Boulder Colorado.
