Anyone have actual experience with egg-binding in CWD?

dianedfisher Mar 31, 2005 12:56 PM

I have a 2 year old CWD. She is obviously gravid. I can feel the lumps in her abdomen. I am giving her calcium glubionate twice weekly. She is not eating (I gave her a lttle chicken baby food with the calcium on Sunday). She has a laying box, in addition to the bottom of the viv which is eco-earth. She was doing a little digging, but I have not noticed any in the past few days. She is still green, still climbing up and down from the pool and back up to her favorite basking spot. The viv temps, humidity, lighting are all within acceptable parameters (MV UVB). Mader says in iguanas that 8 weeks should cover the egg laying process. How long do I wait for her to oviposit before I panic? She is sharing a viv with another female and a male CWD. What are the egg-binding signs? I understand I only have about 48 hrs. to save her if she begins to have a problem. BTW, my daughter's CWD (3 1/2) has laid numerous clutches of eggs without difficulty, but it never seemed to take this long. Please help if you can and Thank You.

I have had two dragons die from it...my vet was useless when I brought them to him, he just said they would lay them soon.

My first dragon was fine and green and digging, and then one day she was just laying in her laying box like she was exhausted. We picked her up and she moved, so we started calling vets but never found one that could see her, and she died about 15 minutes after we picked her up.

The second one I saw no signs at all. She was fine and green and active in the morning, and dead when I got home from work. She was a surprise because she had laid several clutches before without an issue. These would have been her first fertile clutch, and I had an incubator all ready for them

Anyway, I gave my male away and have never had a dragon since then.

But, back to your question. If it seems like it is taking too long, dont hesitate to get her checked out.

Design Girl:You are always there when someone has a problem so I had a feeling you would be able to help. I hope it didn't bring back too many painful memories. There are three of us with (or were 3-unfortunately Zelenka died last evening)with gravid dragons and we are all worried. Obviously, Zelenka's owner had reason to worry and I am afraid for my little girl. I will see if I can get in Saturday to my vet. Thanks, sorry to bring back things you'd rather forget.

I took Drago to the vet this evening. According to the ultrasound, she has 1-unshelled egg visible tonight. Within the next 3 days she should shell and oviposit it and any others that she produces. He wasn't too worried about her current health. Told me to keep up the calcium and chicken, if I can get her to take a little of it.
