New baby with deformed jaw

lizgirl17 Mar 31, 2005 04:52 PM

Hey there, I haven't been around for a while so Hi to everybody!

Anyway I had a baby hatch the other day with a deformed lower jaw. You know how the two jaws are supposed to be the same length, well the lower one is shorter and kind of tucked up inside the upper one. (kind of like a sandfish skink if any one has ever seen one) He hasn't eaten yet but he seemed to shed all right and his mouth can definately open and he can definately bite! So I think he'll be okay. I've been breeding for a few years and this is the first time I've seen this. Every other baby from the same mom and dad are fine, just this little guy. Has anyone ever seen this? Is it more likely a genetic flaw or a calcium deficiant parent (I dust with calcium and vitamins all year long and more so during breeding season). If anybody has any info on this I would be very appreciative. Thanks

I have seen this before. Sadly, sometimes you will get mutations in these little guys that are not favorable.

All I have to say, that you have to alkready know is, don't breed the little man.

Could you post a picture? He will still be a great pet if he starts eating.

Sorry again.

Here's a couple pictures. As you can see the top jaw is much longer and kinda hangs over a little. The throat looks kind of funny too. It's unfortunate, because he definately has some great color on him. But he will be very happy with my friend who is going to "adopt" him.

He's still cute even if his jaw isn't perfect. I think your friend should name him Gonzo because he reminds me of Gonzo from the muppets. Anyway even if you do everything perfectly its just like with people it doesn't always work out perfectly. A multiple birth in any animal is a mutation in itself so this is really no different, I know its not a multiple birth its just an example. There are plenty of animals and people out there that live normal healthy lives with problems like these so don't think that its anything you did wrong because it isn't.
