Any groups/individuals in Indy/Cinci/L'ville area who would be interested in herping partner?

justinmatthew Mar 31, 2005 08:28 PM

I would like someone to herp with in these areas. I am in Central Indiana and I lack the greater knowledge of herpetology/areas to herp. I would like to accompany someone who I can learn from. I am of average knowledge, but there are not a great number of places in my areas that I am familiar enough with to herp. I don't want to collect, only learn and observe. I am a 22 year old responsible college student. I would like to herp with someone during the summer after my classes are over.Let me know if anyone is interested. Thank you.
Justin

I live in Cinci but make it into Indiana once or twice a year. What are you interested in and what are your goals. Indiana has some neat herps...

There are a few more indiana herpers on another website.

I am actually a Browns fan... I know big mistake but oh well. I grew up in detroit and akron. I went to undergrad at OU so I am a little more experienced herping SE Ohio but I am picking some things up around here. Stuff was out earlier in the week...

I have also flipped a ton of garter right on Vine st. I want to learn my way around Shawnee and Pike co a little more as well as the cincinnati area.

Do you ever go the Cinci Herp Soc meetings?

Awesome - garters on vine?! Haha sounds sweet. Shawnee is pretty sweet, iv found tons of copperheads and cottonmouths, saw a few rattlers, plenty of water snakes, seen a few ringnecks etc. Fence lizards and skinks and turtles. Never been to a Cinci herp soc. meeting, are they any good? Showup good? What do the meetings consist of?

Later man

Are you sure you have seen cottonmouths in Shawnee National Forest, OH??

I have still yet to see my timber, but spend most of my time in counties where they are not as common (jackson, vinton). The meetings are pretty good. About 30 people show up but I imagine the turnout this week will be much bigger. Jim Harrison from the Kentucky Reptile Zoo is speaking on the treatment of snake envenomations this Wed at 7. Go to www.cincyherps.com for more information.

Awesome man - I may stop by one of these times. What is the average age in the group? I saw one cottonmouth in Shawnee a while back, but have searched ever since for one and I cant find one again. I read up and it doesnt look like they are native to that area, or are not common at all. We actually were searching near a creek, and found a ringneck under a rock on a small hillside on the creekbed. We were crossing the creek to put it in a container we had and Kevin almost stepped on him. We flipped, but then gained control and studied him for about 10 minutes before he stopped bluffing and swam accross under some brush.
