Please forgive my newbness...but the snake I just bought tonight does that. What does it mean?
Welcome to the world of the fickle ball python! lol Usually it means that the female is gravid and cooking a batch of eggs, but not always! I have a couple of males that do it from time to time. Since you just got yours, is it a female and is it of adult size? If so it could be gravid. I would keep a watch on it over the next 30 to 40 days! Thanx for looking!
Nobody was certain at the shop about sex or age. It's about 2 feet long and the spurs are small but easily visible so I was guessing male...8-10 months old.
Am I wrong? Should I speed up the first vet trip (it's set for 2 weeks from now) or should I just see what happens?
It doesn't sound to me like it is big enough to be gravid. If you have a gram scale weigh her and see how big it is, if it's under like 1200 grams very highly unlikly that it's gravid. But as it's been pointed out sometimes even males lay inverted. There are no visible ways to tell whether you have a m/f, hopefully you've found a herp vet that can sex it for you while you've got it there.
