How to become a herpetoculturist?

viridix Jul 09, 2003 07:59 PM

Hi,

I am looking for a career in herpetology/herpetoculturist (preferably working with venomous snakes [rattlesnakes] testing, caring, breeding, anything around them). I would like any information available on how to do this. I want to start college soon and I don't want to bother spending money on courses that will not help me to do this. I'm located in Arizona. Any recommendations on people I should contact? Any schools that have a killer reputation (I don't care how much money I have to spend on my education, trust me, it will be well worth the time and effort).

Thanks to all.

You will need to major in Biology and Zoology. There is no specific Herpetology degree that I'm aware of.

I don't know what part of the country you are in, but in the south, Auburn University has some killer Biology and Zoology programs. At least they did when Dr. Mount was there. Most major universities have at least some courses geared to this.

I received my degree from Cornell, but many different universities offer this degree. You cna take courses in exotics and courses in herps, and thsi degree is a great steppign stone to careers like zookeeping (I worked at the Bronx Zoo before I became a teacher) or if you were to pursue vet. medecine after that, working with exotics - health, care, and breeding.
