Try to get yourself some spineless varieties of Opuntia cacti. They are available, ask around, go to Mexican specialty markets etc. Regarding spines, they can be problematic. Tortoises of course have fed on them for millions of years, and do so today in the SW deserts and Madagascar, Mediterranean etc. But some varieties of cacti are so spiny they could be a problem, as evidenced by seeing Ctenosaurs in Baja with spines coming out of their bodies! Perhaps a tortoises eyes would be at risk? So, take a young pad, cut it off while wearing tough gloves, ane scrub it with a stiff brush under flowing water. You might try burning the spines off... It just seems a whole lot easier to grow the spineless or nearly so varieties and avoid the hassle. Hot tip, if you get glochids (the tiny hairlike spines) in your fingers, remove them with duct tape!
