or is it ok if they swallow them or will it harm the inside?

...some would toast them over flames to get that pops sounds...
...others just lay them on a clean drive way and step on it (with a good pair of boots of course)...

You can use the back of a knife to scrap them off and where needed just lightly cut them off............

I'm in Ohio and have a big clump of prickly pear that mine got into one day...I never thought about feeding them to him because I didn't want to peel off the thorns.
He ate like a pig & didn't have any problems. He doesn't get them all the time, but once or twice a week all summer. I soak often, but I've never taken the thorns off...he seems to be fine.
