Is it a hatchling or adult/juvi? When I graduated and moved out of my parents house I had to travel 3 hours also to my new apartment. I kept my cham in its regular cage but just made sure it was secure in my van by putting boxes around it so it couldn't move anywhere. Try to avoid driving in the heat of the day. I drove in the early morning so it wouldn't get too hot in the car. Just keep checking on him at rest stops, etc. When you get to your destination, I would set up the cage first and everything for it. He should be fine.

i would set him up as if he were going to be shipped through the mail. place him in a box with holes and put a good amount of losely crumpled paper towels both on all sides of the box as well as on the bottom. for three hours theres no real need to worry about heating especially since it will be in the car with you where you control the temperature. this method has worked perfect for me many times with shipping and moving. the chameleon will hold onto the paper towels on the bottom and there is the barrier around incase it gets bumpy. i would worry too much about things falling from movement if you kept him in the normal cage.

I just moved two weeks ago with mine, and I just put him in a smaller box, with holes. Put in some fake branches and a bunch of fake moss on the bottom. He was quite fine taking him out. Not even stress colors. Until it came time to move him into the new room, and home. Then he made a mad dash up my arm for freedom. Needless to say he didn't quite make it. But I found the box with cushioning works best. Good luck
I agree with the small box vs. cage. When I bring Luna to the vet (45 minute drive) I put her in a box inside another one, stuff bubble wrap b/t the two to help maintain warmth (depends where you live) and put in a non-terry (no loops for claws to catch on) towel in and she just sleeps.
