Red Incandescent bulb for treefrog question

Jeanin Apr 01, 2005 02:13 PM

Hi
I am interested in setting up a 30 gallon high tank for either green treefrogs or Mexican treefrogs (I like them both not sure which yet).
I wanted to know if anyone uses a red incandescent bulb on the screen tank top for night heat?
I would like to use this method as room temp is 70 at night and a bit to cool from what I read but not sure if incandescent light would dry them up.
I cant use under tank heat because with plants and soil the heat wouldnt really get up to the high branches.
Thanks.

I use a red incandescent bulb for my dumpy frog's enclosure. I find it provides just the right level of heating, and I keep it on 24 hrs a day.

I may have to shut it off as my house warms up during the summer, but it works well during the winter when the temps are about 65-70 at night.

Thanks. I am planning on putting it directly on screen cover with a dome fixture. Is that how you use it, and how many watts is yours?
Thanks

Sorry for the slow response.

I use a 25 watt red bulb in a dome reflector that rests on the screen.

Unlike the other poster, my frog roams around under the red light, sometimes basking directly under it. I've been leaving the red light on 24 hours a day, and turning on a full-spectrum fluorescent for about 12hours. But now as the weather warms up I will eventually turn off the red light except for night time viewing.

i wouldnt use it. i have a red bulb to view my frogs. and they actually can see the red, so when i turn the light on, they freeze and instantly start going back to sleep. they say that frogs cant see red...but, i have found in my experience that this is just not true!!

I have no choice because with my AC on at night room will be a bit to cool. But will have no light during day so if they can see red will have the day their night and the night their day(with red incandescent for night heat)

Thanks I am going to do that because in summer I use AC and the night temp gets to 68 so going to try 25 watts and get temp reading under the bulb. If to cool will go to 40 that should do it.
