A veiled cham that likes to be handled???

chamoti4 May 16, 2003 03:58 PM

I got a little veiled about a week ago and haven't touched him since a put him in the cage. Well last night I thought I would move some plants around and couldn't really do so with him in there so I decided to take him out. His color turned dark like I thougt it would, but in an instant he turned bright green, brighter green then he is in his cage. Could this mean he likes being handled. He was walking through my fingers, up my arm, just sitting on my hand looking at me. So that was that and I put him back into his cage. He was climbing the sides looking to get out again. Could this be ture, a veiled that likes to be held.

Hi- When chameleons show off there bright colors they are stress colors. Its not that chameleons like to be held, but more like some take to it better then others. Every chameleon has its own personality.

Hope this helps!

Yes it is possible he likes being out... and you are the means to that end. He will be friendly if things seem to be going his way. hahaha

We have a breeder that actually scratches at the door to be let out. Then he can wander around the house as he chooses. He wasn't always friendly either - but with associating the hand with gentleness and tasty treats (wax worms; hornworms; silkworms), he grew to think of the human hand differently.

Color changes are triggered by emotions - with a few exceptions. A cham will get dark to absorb heat or sunlight - they will become very pale if overheated. They get brighter usually when excited - like when faced with a female or in a territorial display with another male - or even when a new adventure presents itself. If your veiled remains drab in his cage, assess your environment for him - he may need more/less light; heat etc.

Don't be afraid to handle your cham to some extent - when he doesn't want anymore - he will show his discontent. I handle dozens each day as we have a large colony. Most have gotten used to "Mom" fussing in their cages and such... or taking them to the outdoors for some sunlight.
