some friends and I came across this big ol' coachwhip recently. The area holds quite a few as I have seen 3 over 6' there in the last year.

I haven't seen a moose like that in over 20 years. Nice!

... did you see my post on another site with a better account??
This guy tagged me in the face just after a friend took our pic in the field. I also have a pic of my bloody cheek. More embarrassed that I let such a thing happen than anything,it reminded me to watch these guys.
Anyway, I love the term "moose" for this one. When it flew out of an old mattress/springs out into the open, I knew it was something else for sure. It is one of the heaviest coachwhips I've seen in recent memory for sure, The other 2 from the same area were much thinner. The pic at the top of the "Field notes and Observations" forum is a close up of one of those.

That is a very, very nice coachwhip!
That is a big coach... I am always carefull around racers/whips ... I caught a big racer last year that was in my back yard in the grass.. lucky I seen him because I was ready 2 mow the lawn.. he was a little over 5 foot I would say and had a real nasty additude... The problem with racers is they hang on and chew...which needless 2 say can cause some nice gashes..lol

Kinda makes me miss the good ol' days down here in the seventies. I once had a run in with a seven foot male in an open field. Given room to run, you can find yourself really respectful of their speed. And when they rear up, hard snake to top for impressiveness.
