1.1 Bearded dragons rescued

freakofnature Apr 01, 2005 09:44 PM

My wife just picked up 1.1 bearded dragons and brought them home tonight. The woman who had them said they were 3 years old but they seem way small for that age. Is there any type of bearded dragon that stays kinda small or could something have stunted there growth. We had to pay for them but I consider this a rescue I think these guys were way stressed out, the lady who had them ran a foster home so there were several young kids around them. They were also in a very small tank together with no uv light and a heat rock. So its off to the pet store tomorrow to get these guys there own proper setups. Also I know nothing about breeding since until now I have only had my 1 and a half year old male, is there any way to tell if these 2 have already mated. Im not going to even pretend Im an expert about beardies, all I know is the basics of taking care of them so any advice on these 2 would be appreciated.

Improper diet, lighting and housing can all cause stunted growth. It is possible that in a correct environment they might grow a bit more, but they will likely always be stunted. You can check for eggs in the females belly, it is likely they have mated since they were housed together. She will need a lot of loving care if she is gravid, because she is already in a somewhat weakened condition. Good luck with them!

new to this myself, but I do know there are rankins dragons...they are smaller in size...down lower on this page they were being discussed...although, they could just be small due to improper conditions and food...

look below for How do I know she's a Rankins? by Aeromeggy post, that starts the rankins discussion...also, heating rocks should not be used in any case since the dragon could get burnt as they do not feel a localized temperature, but an overall body temperature...

If they are three years old and more th an 12", it's not likely they are rankins. Most likely they are small due to improper husbandry. I would separate them then sex them, to make sure you do hae a 1:1 pair. If the previous owner hasn't seen any eggs in the last couple years, it's not likely they are male/female. Most likely two females. But in either case, separate them completely, and give both a good proper diet with lots of fresh greens and some crickets or silkworms. A vet inspection for both would be a good ideal as well.

Keep them well away from your current dragon and wash hands before handling your male after handling the two new comers. Last thing you need is these new dragons having a series viral disease that can take out your healthy dragon. Also, make sure food dishes etc from the new comers don't get in contact with those of your male dragon, or handle your dragon after handling the food dishes etc of the newcomers, making sure you wash your hands completely. This will prevent any cross contamination. I would do this for a good 3 months and three healthy fecal checks on the new comers to make sure there are no nasties to spread.
