arinin Apr 02, 2005 01:22 AM

Hello,

i seek info about folklore about snakes and search trough inet resources, but found very little about it, except, Greek, Egyptean etc, offcource. Maybe somebody can help me with African, SE Asian, North and South American species (here is no importance - which exactly)? Offcourse, i will be glad to hear any information about folklore, myth or superstitions about snakes or other reptiles or amphibians too.

Please, contact with me by this email - ivan_arinin@mail.ru

My specialty is serpents in the Levant (Mediterranian region) but I have pieces of info from around the world. First look up "Ophiolatreia" on google and you should be able to find a free 1800's version. This is probably the classic serpent worship book even though it was written before some important modern updates to our understanding of the cultures. If that dosn't slake your thirst I would HIGHLY recommend "The Cult of the Serpent" by Mundkur. It's out of print so your probably going to need to order it through the library, but it's well worth it. If you need any more info contact me @ lyterius@yahoo.com

I fear that i can use only free sources because getting of any books or magazines is impossible for me. I cant use e-shops for some matters and here, in Russia, such literature is very rare. offcourse, we have many books about myths and legends of Rome, Greece, Egypt and more or less China, but this is already well known for me and i need info about other cultures.

Well, india is a big snake worshipping country, you can research the Nagas as far as that goes. Many cultures (including the indians of america) saw snakes as being wise and powerful guardian type entities. Many cultures associated snakes with eternal life becasue of the snakes ability to shed. Just do some googles and you'll have more than enough information. By the way, the aboriginies (didn;t spell it right) believed that if you disturbed the pythons in their jungles that bad weather would come. I think that was the aboriginies, not 100% on that one. Anyway hope it helps!
