they can see color, but depth perception?

beaverman Apr 02, 2005 01:58 PM

I know my Uro can see color. He attacks the green seed in his mixture, but it seems like he has a hard time judging the distance to them. He lunges his head sticks out his tongue and licks them up. But sometimes it takes him 2 or three tries to get his seed/greenbean pieces/peas-(dusted)

No firm answer, but a good generality, I think:
Any animal with at least binocular vision can judge depth, but one needs the eyes pointing in the same direction to be able to do it well. Uros seem to have missed the evolutionary path of a predator where this is more important and instead have a greater range of vision with their eyes towards the sides of their heads to avoid predators (they can't be real high on the food chain). I've seen a number of my Uros watching me with only one eye, the side of the head turned towards me, instead of head-on like a cat, dog, or human.

i don't think they can because helga and hugo will just walk off my bed like it keeps going and they do only use one eye to look at me. however, my collareds only look at me with one eye and they gracefully catch crickets that are jumping around and that has to take some kind of depth perception. i know i can't catch things in my mouth, lol.
they definitely distinguish colors and tastes. helga will only eat green and purple pellets. she absolutely loves peas and will eat dry yellow ones but she will not eat anything else that is yellow.

Good question. That's interesting. Take out a herpetology book or something.

My guess is their depth perception isn't so good. I would imagine that's the reason you can sneak up on a lizard really slow and they won't run, and if you move fast or get too close they'll freak.
