How many in a 55 gallon???

pogo_the_dragon Apr 02, 2005 07:35 PM

Just wondering how many leo's you can put comfortable in a 55 gallon tank, and also since they are nocturnal can you use a blacklight without disturbing them???

Generally, the rule of thumb is about 10-15 gallons per leo.

As for a Blacklight, I think they're okay. Just keep them covered so the leos can't touch them.

I have a 55 galllon. I only have 3 leo's in there, but the tanbk should hold up to 5-6. Just make sure you have a hide or cave for each leo.

It should hold 5 - 6. You'll need a LOT of hides so they don't fight over them.

As for the blacklight, I found that it was actually disturbing my geckos. I liked having it on to view at night, but I noticed they weren't eating well and seemed a bit stressed. I put a timer on so that the blacklight is on while I'm still awake, and then goes off for 6 hours of complete darkness. Since I did that, they are much less stressed and are eating better.

I agree 5-6 leos is plenty for a 55 gallon.

So you'd need 5-6 regular hides, and a couple humid hides (if not one for each leo) so they can go in there if they want to (or a big one if they all get along).

Leopard Gecko's cannot see red, so I leave the red light on over my tank all day and all night and it keeps Phoenix's humid hide humid, it also keeps him warm. It stimulates his appetite and he has gained a couple of grams since I have gotten him which I think is terrific.
