Baby Food Dilemma

MillionPoundBomb Apr 02, 2005 08:38 PM

I have been trying different ways to feed my cresteds and gargoyles. Mixing baby food with CGD, just CGD, crickets with CGD... etc etc... Just to see what they like.

Now, with baby food most of them have Asorbic Acid(vitamin c) in them. Is this bad for the geckos?

Also, how much calcium powder(I used Leopard Gecko dust by TREX) do you use in the baby food for adults? And how often? One of my yearlings may be getting floppy tail so I am making sure I have this right. I am pretty new with cresteds.

Also, is it best to feed a varied diet? Currently I feed baby food one day, two days later a live food(like crickets and occasionally waxworms), then two days after that, CGD.

This forum has been a big help to my love of Rhacodactylus, Thanks!

If you are going to feed baby food, mix it in with CGD. The diet schedule I used when I fed live crickets was: Day 1 CGD, day 2 crickets, day 3 CGD, day 4 CGD (left in from day 3), day 5 nothing. I no longer feed crickets, only CGD and I change it every other day mixed as the directions say.

I thought you were not supposed to mix anything with the CGD (other than water, etc) as it messes with the nutritional balance and could lead to problems?

I follow Robbie Hampers method in her book: mix meat flavored baby food with fruit flavored baby food (no added sugars, preservatives, artifical flavoring or coloring, etc) and supplements. Some days I puree fresh fruit and feed that with supplements instead. Other days I feed dusted worms (silkworms, waxies, butterworms) or crickets.

That is true, that is why I feed only CGD now. CGD eliminates the need for other foods such as fruit, crickets etc...

Okay, just wanted to be sure I was thinking correctly and to make sure that was mentioned since you were recommending that they mix the CGD w/ baby food.

Looking back I shouldn't recommend it, but a lot of people do mix baby food with CGD with no ill effects. I used to do it and I believe Anthony Caponetto used to mix them as well. When I saw on his website that he was switching, I switched also.

So you are using straight CGD? Do you add any live crickets to the diet also? Just curious because Im using baby food and CGD mixed alternating every other day with crickets dusted with calcium. Is this ok or is going to straight CGD the way to go?

kidcrazee82 Apr 03, 2005 07:59 PM

Allen Repashy, the maker of the diet, says to go straight CGD mixed with water as it says on the bottle. The diet was not designed to be mixed with baby food. There is no need to feed crickets, but there is nothing wrong with it. The only reason I do not feed crickets is because it gets expensive with the amount of geckos I have to feed. I believe the healthiest way (correct me if I'm wrong) is to mash up the fresh stuff. I tried this but the fruit didn't last very long before it turned black in the deli cup. There is more information on Allen Repashy's website - reptiles.repashy.com -Joe
