chameleon habitat

carlsyoung Apr 02, 2005 09:43 PM

I am about to get a jackson's chameleon. I am in the process of setting up the cage. Does anyone know where online I can order some plants to put in the cage. I have heard species of the ficus are good as well as pothos.

My own preference I don't care for the ficus for cham enclosures. They are grown under intense light in greenhouses to maintain dense growth, they don't do well with lots of moisture unless maintained with intense light. So what happens when you put it in your cham cage is a lot of yellowing, dropping leaves. I also feel the growth habit is pretty dense for it to be comfortable for a cham to move around in. Add to the expnese of one of a good size and I feel there are better choices.

Scheflera Arboricola the dwarf shceflera is a good choice with a more open growth structure and better suitability to low light high moisture environments.

Number one in my book is Pothos. It grows well in almost any light condition, is tough and handles moisture much better than any other plant. New plants are easily started from cuttings to create more growth for your enclosure. I like to make trellises out of different diameter dowel rods held together with zip ties for the pothos to twine around. Cover the soil in the pot with sphagnum moss. Instead of online this is available just about everywhere. I find my best ones and cheapest at Lowe's. When I was breeding Jackson's I found 6" pots of ones that they were closing out because they looked a little ragged for less than $5.00/pot. A few weeks in my enclosures and you no longer could tell they had been raggedy rejects.

Hope this helps.
