A few questions for the Dumeril fans...

toddg Apr 02, 2005 10:34 PM

I have started a few breeding projects and considering a small Dumeril group as well. I have always kept BPs but have owned red tails before, so hoping the essentials aren't too far off.

First, I have read the temps should be in the mid 80's on the hot side of the enclosure. Well, I have a rack set up where temps range about 92 - 94 under the hides for my BPs. Would this fry a Dumeril even though they live in dry, arid conditions in the wild? Second, what is the average clutch size for these boas? What is the mean price for a hatchling? I want to make sure breeding them is worth the effort, otherwise, I would prefer a different species since caring for multiple animals is costly. Last, can large adults be housed in a 35 x 17 x 6 sweater boxes or is this too small?

TIA and best of luck to all this season,
Todd

I would not advise obtaining Dumerils if you want to sell the offspring. Dumerils have plumetted in value over the last few years and are now literally being given away over here in England.
If you are intent on getting some, you will need to provide them with at least a 4 foot X 2 foot floor area each. Females will grow to 5 foot in length and get quite heavy bodied; male reach about 4 foot.

That's really interesting - how is the boa and herp market in England? What is popular there and what is not? Any particular reasons why Dumeril's are not in demand? Mark

Ahhh! Thanks for the input. The little bit of due diligence on my part proved adults sell for roughly $200 a pop, so unless the clutch sizes are large it would be hard to net a profit. I could not find many price listings for hatchlings, but I did not dig very hard. Also, if adults are $200 then neonates must be around $75 - $125 range, IMO. Just a guess.

I may buy one as a pet down the road but would like to focus on getting some breeders for now. As far as boas go, Dumeril's and BRB are what I had in mind since I have always been quite fond of them. Also, I would like to focus on smaller species.

Well, thanks again for the advice. What is hot on your side of the woods?

Todd
