Stunted Growth in Veiled Chameleon (long)

Chamcham505 Apr 03, 2005 10:25 AM

Hello,
About 4 1/2 months ago, I "rescued" a baby veiled chameleon from a pet shop. The chameleon was in deplorable conditions, with incorrect lighting, no water available, and only one plant to cling onto. I knew it was a bad idea to purchase him, becuase I have always been told its not good to purchase a chameleon from a pet shop, becuase they may be WC, or not have proper care, and so on and so forth. He looked to be about 1 1/2 inches when I purchased him. I immediatly put him in a 10 gallon aquarium, temporarily, until I could get his other cage situated. He now lives in a 22g reptarium, with a reptisun 5.0, and a 65w basking light. He also goes outside to get direct sunlight often. The temps range from 72-80, and he is always sprayed and has adeqeute water supplies and humidity. His food consitsts of: small crickets, fruitflies, and the occasional mealworms are always dusted with calcium D3 every other day, and a multivitamin every week. I have had him for 4 months now, and he grew only about a half on an inch! Is this stunted growth? All the other chameleons I have had have always grown to be robust and healthy, since they were babies. I was going to keep him temporarily, then find him a GOOD home for him, someone I know that would take care of him. I just dont know what to do. I know I have to take him to a vet, and I am planning to do so. Thanks sooo much, and all input will be appreciated.
Michele
Just thought I would let you know, he appears to have no signs of Metabollic Bone disease.

Michele,
Just as there are runts in dogs and cats - there are runts in reptiles. We have seen 1-1/2yr old chams the same size as a 4 month old.

On the other hand, it is still too early to tell if he will always be a runt - forever. You may see a sudden growth spurt before they are a year old. But even if this happens - they usually are smaller than others in the clutch.

Nature isn't always perfect.....

Reptayls,
Thank you so much for the information! I took him to the vet today, and his problem was diagnosed. Luckily, he isnt suffering from MBD or any other chronic disease. The vet discerned that he may just be a runt, like you suggested, and that he is perfectly happy and healthy. I am so glad to hear this, for I was worried. All the other chameleons I have ever had grew quickly, but at least he doesnt appear to be suffering. Thank you again!
Michele
