Lighting Questions

Animalfarie15 Apr 03, 2005 02:07 PM

Hi,

I am currently trying to figure out how to set up my soon to be anole aquarium but I have a few things I need to sort out. I am planning to get a ReptiSun 5.0 to put in the hood on top of the aquarium. But what size would be appropriate? Also one of the websites I saw said a GE Reveal light also on the basking side of the tank. I am prepared to get a clamp lamp for that but what wattage would be appropriate. Also I am trying to figure out would a twenty long be ok for one anole or should I do the thirty gallon. Also is it alright to just mist the tank or would a fogger be better? Should I make a vet appt. for my anole when I first get him?

Hannah Sorry for all the questions!

Since Anoles are semi-arboreal, it would be best to get one of the "high" terrariums if you have a choice. Get a strip light fixture that goes all the way across the top of the terrarium. The bulb to fit it will probably be a couple of inches shorter than the fixture. GE Reveal lights are not necessary, they just have a higher (C)olor (R)endering (I)ndex than most incandescent bulbs which will give you a more true color. The wattage depends on the distance from the basking spot. The temperature there should be between 85-92 degrees. I have a variety of bulbs ranging from 40 Watt to 100 Watt that I change depending on the ambient room temperature. The higher wattage bulbs are for the winter when the room is cooler.

Thank you for the info. Do they make a 30 tall tank?

Essentially. I think it is actually a 29 gallon "tall". Get the largest (and highest) you can resonably afford. Anoles appreciate the extra space. The general yardstick is 10 gallons per animal but that is a minimum. Oh yes, If you choose to get more than one Anole, make sure that you only have one male. If you get a pair, prepare for the inevitable offspring -- they are VERY good at reproducing. More than a single female will get along fine although there might be some minor disagreements until they work out a pecking order.

You may want to consider buying a dual fluorescent fixture. Having both the 5.0% bulb and a high CRI bulb will make your anoles feel even more comfortable. I bought a 24" one for my 29gal that houses 2 18" bulbs and it leaves plenty of space for my 10" and 8.5" reflectors.
