Shedding Disease?

leopardgeo Apr 03, 2005 02:17 PM

Hi all. I have about 10 leopard, all different ages and whatnot, and until recently, everything has been going great.

I recently had one of my yearling albinos die. I have no clue why, and another couple of my geckos are showing the same signs as the albino did before she died.

Its basically looked like a bad shed at first, so I soaked her, and all way good, then a few days later, it looked like she was going to shed again. I didn't think anything of it. Then I look ather eyes, are they are virtually closed. I thought that with the next shed, any skin maybe left in the eye would go away. Well she started to shed, but then died mid shed. It was extremely strange. She was healthy in all other ways.

Then I have a little leopard, who has the same eye things as the albino, and was showing them first, but she's still holding in there. Just her eyes look closed/cloudy and her jaw has grown like a bump on it. Then a third gecko, who is a sub adult, looks like she was in shed, and her eyes are completely closed.

Their eyes are closed, so they cant eat/drink. I think this is extremely odd, and was wondering if anyone else has had similar expiriances, or knows whats up.

Thanks.

the "bump" in the lips, is shed building up around the gums, do you have a humid hide in there with them? this sounds like more of a horrible shedding problem more than a disease

the eyes are closingand becoming cloudly, because the shed is more than likely getting stuck and drying out on the spectacle(scale over the eye) causing the eye to become infected, this will lead to the eye drying up and either falling out, or becoming so infected that it drys out completely and stays in the geckos sockets, causing pus to grow around it and becoming larger, and more infected, if this happened, eventually a vet will need to remove the eyes, give them a good humid hide and keep it damp, spray it everyday, i would also reccomend seperating them for now, just incase it is something a little more complicated, why take a risk right?

they are probably dying from dehydration, the shed will dry them out rather fast, and stress them more than ever, and stress is the #1 killer of any animal, next to ignorance

if it gets worse, take them to a vet
