ok, I have had my turtle pond (actually one of those gold fish ponds) for a few years and have just let the algae grow after multiple attempts at killing it. I have a rela good filter and all but the algae grows so much here. Everyhting outside that has water turns green in like 3 days. Is there eanythign I can put in the water? I was thinking baout some lime but I don't know if that would be alright for the turtles. I am goign to put alot of driftwood in there this year and was wondering if that would help keep it under control because that will give it a little more acidity, right?

Clams. They're filter feeders and will take out phytoplankton (what makes the water green).

And the turtles will eat them, too!

I know you can buy saltwater clams at various seafood markets. I'd be really careful buying any freshwater clams - most of them are pretty heavily harvested already, and some states have a blanket protection system for any shellfish.

If you live near the Great Lakes, you can get all the zebra mussels you want. Just don't put them anywhere near a body of water that is connected to anything else - backyard ponds ONLY.

Check aquabid.com for clams and all sorts of stuff. I live in northern ohio, but I have no transportation to lake erie? Do you know anyone that would catch a few zebra mussels and mail em to me? I'll pay shipping the cost of the clams. Burmish101@hotmail.com let me know.
Thanks,
